BB at Lat Phrao 91: When Your Therapist Used to Teach Massage
A quiet former teacher, now on the table. What it actually feels like when the person massaging you used to grade other people doing the same job.
Most therapists in Bangkok came up the same way: a few weeks of training, a few years of apprenticeship, and then the table. The path is fine; it produces a lot of competent hands. But once in a while a different route lands at the spa, and the work feels different from the first minute of the session. BB, who joined our Lat Phrao 91 team recently, is one of those.
Before he worked for us, BB taught at a massage school. For years. That means he did the technique, and then he stood behind students who were doing the technique, and he told them what they were getting wrong. It is the kind of training that turns "I can do it" into "I can also explain why this works." On the table, you feel it before he ever speaks.
What the teacher background actually does to a session
The most visible difference is pacing. BB does not rush. He also does not drag — there is no theatre about being slow. He simply moves at the speed where each stroke does its job and the next stroke can build on it. Therapists who learned by speed-running through customers often miss this; you can be deep without being effective, fast without being efficient. BB is neither in a hurry nor lazy. He is at the speed that works.
The second thing you notice is transitions. Most therapists drop pressure between strokes — they let go, reposition, and start over. BB carries the pressure across, so the hour feels continuous instead of episodic. You don't get the little resets that pull you back into the room.
The third, and the most teacherly, is the setup. Before he works your shoulder, he places it. Before he opens your hip, he checks the angle. These are the unglamorous beats that get skipped by everyone in a hurry, and they are the difference between massage that helps and massage that just happens.
What he is not
BB is not a chatty therapist. He is genuinely polite — almost shy off the table — and will answer any question you ask, clearly and briefly. But he does not lead the conversation. If you book a male therapist in Bangkok because you want a thirty-minute warm-up of small talk, BB will feel formal. Book one of our more social therapists instead. If you book because you want a quiet hour and steady hands, you will find his presence exactly right.
He is also not a "deep tissue or nothing" therapist. He can go deep when asked, and the depth is well-mapped — you don't get the bruised-next-day feeling — but his default is medium pressure with very good directionality. If you want someone to walk on your back, he is not the booking. If you want someone who actually understands what your back is doing, he is the booking.
Programs that play to his strength
Most of our oil-based programs work well with BB. Aroma oil, Thai oil, and our signature Hawaiian Flow Aroma all reward the kind of long, continuous strokes he is good at. The traditional dry Thai is also very strong with him because the joint mobilisations — the bending and the stretching — are where a teacher's eye is most obvious. Sixty-minute slots are fine. Ninety is generous and feels like a gift.
Who should book BB
Repeat massage clients who have started to feel the difference between schools of training. First-time guests at Mandel who would rather start with a calm, professional presence than a chatty one. Anyone with a specific complaint — a stuck shoulder, a tight psoas, a back that has been "fine" for too long — who would like the therapist to actually work on it. And, frankly, anyone curious about what a properly trained pair of male massage hands feels like when they have nothing to prove.
